Some Travel Sketches/Comics

I’ve been in Europe for two weeks, first in Norway for the Bergen non-fiction book festival, then Germany (Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt) and Austria for events and press to promote the German edition of Rolling Blackouts, then back to Norway for a day on my way back to the US. Phew!

I wasn’t able to do as many journal comics and sketches as I would have liked (and none in Germany; my German publisher, Reprodukt, kept me VERY busy! It was a work trip after all) but here’s a selection of the sketches I was able to squeeze in. I apologize for the poor image quality. They’re all iphone photos. Maybe when I get home I’ll scan them properly? Or expand them to make a travelogue? Maybe neither!

  1. I read How to Understand Israel… in one fell swoop yesterday. I learned so much but also came away with more questions. Mission accomplished! Just ordered Rolling Blackouts and looking forward to settling in with it for a few hours later this week. I also live in the PNW, but my best friend lives in Norway so I *have* to visit her there every couple years. Really identified with the frame “I am horrified that one could get used to this.” Fortunately my friend blesses/tortures me with gorgeous photos on a regular basis. After 8 years she is still in awe of that place.

  2. I live near Portland OR, which has the same kind of mountains as Seattle. I have lived in the same house for all of my life (I’m in my late teens) and I can see a mountain from my living room. Or at least we could… before the neighbors willow tree grew in. I guess I don’t really appreciate the amazing-ness of that fact. I suspect that my reaction to someone pointing out the mountains visible from Portland would be to roll my eyes. That’s a tragedy!
I think that it’s really cool that you turned a layover into a cool experience! My girl scout troop did that too! We were on our way to Sydney, and we had a 10 hour layover in New Zealand and we had a little ‘day’ trip. I put ‘day’ in quotes because to us, it was still night time.
You seem to travel so much! It would be cool to travel all over and see historical palaces and things. Ha! I thought New York and DC were really historical. Its got nothing on most of Europe!
Just saying: I am so envious of your drawing skills. Alas! I don’t have the patience to draw for thousands of hours in order to get even close that good.
